Amy Gulbransen

Tumuaki | Partner

I have been in legal practice since 2013, beginning my career in general practice before specialising exclusively in family law from 2016. I advise and represent clients across the full spectrum of family law matters, including Care of Children, Family Violence, Oranga Tamariki, and Relationship Property disputes, as well as the complex and often overlapping issues that arise alongside these proceedings.

In addition to acting for clients, I am regularly appointed by the Family Court to act for children, a role that requires careful judgment, independence, and a child-focused approach. I also receive appointments as Counsel to Assist the Court, undertaking a wide range of tasks to support the Court’s decision-making process in family law proceedings.

I graduated from the University of Canterbury in 2011 and spent time living and working in Italy before commencing legal practice in Nelson. In 2018, I relocated to Wellington, where I continue to practise while also maintaining long-standing professional relationships with clients in Nelson and other regions throughout New Zealand. Over the course of my career, I have acted for parties across multiple areas, bringing a broad and pragmatic perspective to my work.

Prior to joining Tiaki Family Law as a partner in 2026, I practised as a Barrister at Wellington Family Law Chambers, following earlier roles in specialist family law firms. This varied professional background has given me a depth of experience across both solicitor and barrister practice, enabling me to provide strategic, well-rounded advice tailored to each client’s circumstances.

I take great pride in the quality of my work and am committed to assisting clients to achieve the best possible outcomes in what are often highly personal and emotionally challenging situations. I am particularly passionate about access to justice and believe strongly in ensuring that people from all walks of life understand their legal position, their options, and the potential consequences of the choices they make.

I am one of the Wellington Regional Representatives for the Family Law Section. In this role, I assist with organising continuing professional development opportunities and professional events for the wider family law bar, while also contributing a local perspective to the national Family Law Section executive.

Outside of practice, I enjoy seeking out new and exotic scuba diving destinations, running increasingly long distances for fun, and sampling Wellington’s ever-evolving restaurant scene
