Kaiwawao Matua | Associate
I started my professional career working at a medium sized firm in Levin in 2022, practising family law. I continued in that role until 2024, when I moved to another medium sized firm in Porirua. During my time in Porirua, I began practicing Criminal Law, however my passion has always been Family Law. I have practiced primarily in Care of Children Act and Family Violence Act matters. I am a Lead Family Legal Aid Provider.
I graduated with my Bachelor of Laws from Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha (University of Canterbury) in 2021. During my studies, I volunteered at Community Law Canterbury in various teams, including their Family Law Clinic and Prison Project. I later worked as a Law Clerk in their Greater Christchurch Claims Resolution team, which supported homeowners in Christchurch with their insurance claims following the earthquakes. In my professional career I have worked closely with Women’s Refuges in Levin and Porirua. I also work with Social Workers at Arohata Women’s Prison in Tawa, taking direct referrals and helping incarcerated mothers with care of children issues.
I enjoy the range of challenges that being a family lawyer brings. I have strong written and oral advocacy skills that I demonstrate in an empathetic and considerate way to support my clients in challenging times. I am passionate about ensuring positive outcomes for my clients and their tamariki.
I grew up in Christchurch with my parents and older brother, and I frequently spent time with my two older sisters, who live in Australia with my nieces and nephews. My whānau have always been keen to see as much of our own backyard as possible, and I have been lucky to travel a lot of Aotearoa with them.
Outside of work I spend my time exploring new restaurants and attending concerts with friends. I am an avid reader and moviegoer, and I enjoy beating my friends at Monopoly Deal.
